More than 7,000 people have fled their homes in northern Mozambique’s Cabo Delgado province since late September, according to new International Organization for Migration data cited by the UN on Nov. 4.

IOM said people were escaping fresh violence and fear of attacks by non-state armed actors, UN spokesman Stéphane Dujarric said. Women and children make up nearly 80% of the recent arrivals.

As of October, Cabo Delgado hosted more than 205,000 displaced people across 84 sites, and more than half of them are children, according to IOM. Dujarric said the new arrivals add to a crisis that has lasted for years.

IOM is supporting displaced families and host communities with emergency shelter, essential household items and camp coordination, the spokesman said. The briefing did not identify the armed groups involved or give casualty figures.
