NOAA launches Rapid Refresh Forecast System for short-term forecasts
The new model replaces several aging regional systems and extends hourly forecast lead time to 84 hours.
Status: source-checked.
NOAA's National Weather Service put its Rapid Refresh Forecast System into operation on Nov. 3, the agency said in a Nov. 4 release.
The model combines the hourly updates and 3-kilometer resolution of the High Resolution Rapid Refresh model with the continental coverage of the North American Mesoscale model, according to NOAA. It extends forecast lead time for the contiguous United States to 84 hours, compared with 48 hours for HRRR.
NOAA said the system covers all of North America and includes added functions for forecasting fire weather, smoke and dust plumes. Accuracy claims are the agency's own; independent performance evaluations were not reviewed.
