Connor McDavid extended his season-opening point streak to 17 games with a goal and three assists, but the Edmonton Oilers lost 5-4 to the Anaheim Ducks on Nov. 5. The Oilers captain briefly left the game for evaluation after a first-period collision before returning, NHL.com reported Nov. 6.

Anaheim defenseman Drew Helleson’s hit sent McDavid into the left goalpost at 8:06 of the first period. McDavid remained on the ice briefly and then objected to the play. A resulting confrontation led to fighting, instigating and game-misconduct penalties for Edmonton’s Vasily Podkolzin.

McDavid said the collision concerned him because of serious injuries he suffered on earlier plays near the boards and goalpost. He described those situations as dangerous but said he did not expect opponents simply to give him a clear path to the net. The report did not announce any disciplinary ruling against Helleson.

The four-point game gave McDavid a league-leading 44 points, including 10 goals and 34 assists, through the streak. He had returned later in the opening period after the evaluation, according to NHL.com. Edmonton’s next scheduled game in that account was at home against Vancouver on Nov. 7.
