More than 313,000 people have been displaced in western and northwestern Yemen since the beginning of August, the United Nations said Nov. 6, an increase of 13,000 from its previous update.
Ta’iz governorate has absorbed the largest share, with more than two in five of the displaced seeking shelter there, UN spokesman Stéphane Dujarric said, citing the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs. People continue to flee their homes across several governorates, he said.
The UN Human Rights Office has verified 281 civilian casualties since early August, including 69 people killed and 212 injured, according to Dujarric. Children account for more than a third of the casualties. Two days earlier, the UN said cargo trucks carrying flour and staple foods had pulled back from Ta’iz city and that prices of essential goods there had risen as much as fivefold.
Aid groups are providing families with ready-to-eat food, hygiene supplies and other emergency items where access allows, the spokesman said. The UN called on all parties to protect civilians and civilian infrastructure, respect international humanitarian law and allow safe, sustained and unimpeded humanitarian access.
