Representatives of more than 190 countries are set to gather in Antalya, Türkiye, from Nov. 9 to 20 for COP31, the annual UN climate conference, in a year marked by floods, heat waves and droughts, UN News reported.
Türkiye will host and preside over the talks, while Australia leads the negotiations, working closely with Pacific Island countries, according to UN News. Unresolved issues include climate finance for developing countries, how to run a just-transition mechanism agreed last year, measuring progress on adaptation and strengthening emissions cuts. The conference will also launch the second global stocktake under the Paris Agreement.
“There’s sometimes this expectation that COPs will always have this big grand deal that will solve the climate crisis. That’s not realistic,” Selwin Hart, the UN special adviser on climate action and just transition, told UN News. Delegates are also expected to work on proposed goals including raising the share of energy demand met by electricity from just over 20% in 2024 to 35% by 2035, ABC News reported.
For the second year in a row, no official Trump administration delegation will attend, ABC News reported, though a group of more than 100 U.S. governors, mayors and other state and local officials plans to participate. “America Is All In is showing up in force at COP31 to let the world know that millions of Americans are still in,” said Gina McCarthy, the group’s chair.
